Equal Exchange

I remember the summer of 1990 when my oldest brother, tired of his paper route, convinced me that I should take over. The next day I was rolling and delivering the illustriously thin Fort Wayne News-Sentinel, not on a bike - Mom said it was "too dangerous" to ride and chuck papers - but walking in the hot blazing sun with 25 pounds extra weight for two hours. I don't remember receipt of any full payment. Apparently, I zipadeedodahed each day, loving the purity of the work. Turns out my brother continued to receive checks and just cut a dollar or two to me at his leisure. There wasn't much I could do, technically it was "his paper route" and I just worked there.

That's roughly the daily experience of the world's coffee workers: poor working conditions, low pay, unfair trade agreements, and (unlike me and my plea to my parents) the workers have no recourse for complaints. Obviously, the global coffee economy doesn't have the best reputation.

EQUAL EXCHANGE COFFEE seeks to redefine coffee. Their mission is to build strong communities through, well, equal exchange between farmer and consumer, where each participant is treated with respect and dignity.

More than a coffee with a fancy seal smacked on a colorful bag; Equal Exchange roasts excellent coffee with a social mission in mind. Hard to argue with that, but a bit easier to enjoy each day.

The Produce Station carries FRENCH ROAST (our favorite!), BREAKFAST BLEND, COLOMBIAN, and DECAFFEINATED .

The Manzano is sweet and dry with a delicious strawberry-apple flavor. Eat Manzano bananas when the skin shows a greater amount of black or are completely black. A pure yellow Manzano will not please!

BABY BANANA : These little buggers are full of Vitamin B6 and can be baked, sauteed, broiled, or grilled. The Baby is rich, creamy, sweet, and the only clean-up involved is wiping your own mouth in utter amazement. A great, healthy way to boost your energy level throughout the day. Enjoy when skin is slighty black.

RED BANANA : Easy to admire, better to eat. The irresistible inky red bananas are sweet, hearty, and perfect for baking. Rich in Vitamin C and beta carotene, Red bananas make a lovely table centerpiece. The dull red skin turns purplish when ripe.

ORGANIC BANANAS : Eat me! A less-guilt ridden banana produced without the aid of synthetic pesticides, fungicides, or fertilizers. These biodynamic, organic bananas are shipped in sterile containers directly from the growers to you.

PLANTAINS : The potato of the tropical world! Plantains are starchy and low in sugar and are used in thousands of recipes, like my famous cinnamon-vanilla plantain fries! Lip-smackin' fried goodness. Pick plantains that are green to almost black. Prepare and eat as you would a vegetable.

.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
"Going bananas" is a rather under appreciated term these days. I don't often hear many, if any, people use the term in everyday speech. Usually people use the over-dramatic and weightless terms: crazy, batty, nuts, etc. Well, who isn't crazy these days? But, tell someone you're going bananas? Look out.

I can think of one recent episode when the term might have proved effective. A middle-aged mother was at DSW with her two children, let's call them Jordyn and Jadyn. Being kids, they abandoned their mother to raise havoc up and down the aisles. The obviously frustrated mother kept yelling at the kids: "Jordyn! Jaydyn! Git back here! I'm looking. Jordyn. I am trying to look. Git yer brother Jaydyn and git back. I am looking!" The children demurred.

Imagine the results, if instead she calmly yelled, "Jordyn! Jaydyn! I am going bananas over here. Git back so I can look!" Instant success.

It is unclear why a cheese competition was held during a congress meant to carve up the European continent, but the decision was unanimous and has lasted almost 200 years. Perhaps the UN should consider a cheese competition at the next security council?

BRIE de MEAUX (mo): Intially, this brie offers a strong, almost bitter taste, but give it a little time and Brie de Meaux will mellow into a soft, aromatic treat. Hints of herb, hazelnut and lightly acidic in taste. Inside the soft rind is an even softer golden yellow paste that works as a spread on sandwiches or an excellent selection on a cheeseboard.

Produced in Ile de France, Brie de Meaux has been enjoyed for centuries by kings and peasants alike. Pair with a Pinot Noir or Bourgueil - both available at The Produce Station.

SAVE $4.00 on BRIE de MEAUX - ONLY $22.99!
